Two semesters a year
An academic year in Germany is divided into the Summer Semester and the Winter Semester. Each semester spans six months and has two phases - the lecture period and the lecture-free period.

Lectures and lecture-free time
During the lecture period, classes run at the university. In the lecture-free period, end-of-term exams are held, and students can take internships, work on projects, or take holidays.

Lectures, seminars and exercises
Normal lectures are presentations on core topics. Seminars are interactive exchanges with professors. Exercises let you apply theory to practical projects. Modules often combine a lecture with an exercise, ending in a presentation, assignment or exam.

ECTS credit points
Each module earns Credit Points or ECTS points, which make German programmes comparable with those in other countries. Grades from exams contribute to your overall average. Credit points show the progress of your studies in Germany.
